INTRODUCTION
As the Department of Educations’ first ever center for Earth and
Space Science and Technology Education, the New York City Center for
Space Science Education (NYCCSSE) offers opportunities for exploration,
engagement, and sustained inquiry to students, educators, and the community
of New York City. By leveraging the resources of NASA, the Challenger
Center for Space Science Education, the American Museum of Natural History,
and other leaders in space exploration, NYCCSSE strives to strengthen
science education throughout the City of New York.
The center, located in the west wing of the Corlear’s Complex on
Henry St. in downtown Manhattan, consists of 5 classrooms that have been
entirely re-constructed and equipped with cutting edge technology, space
simulation apparatus, and computer software – all of which are staffed
with full-time Department of Education educators. Our mission is to be
an extension of the classroom for both teachers and students by providing
one-of-a-kind educational experiences for students and professional development
for teachers, administrators and families.
SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP LICENSE
In addition to providing opportunities for students to visit our
one-of-a-kind center as a content extension to the classroom, we also
afford teachers of science similar learning opportunities. Our professional
development goals are to provide professional learning opportunities
for teachers that support the current Department of Education initiatives
and the state and national standards.
As a center for science education, we strive to provide opportunities
for students and teachers that are unique and exciting, while still providing
the necessary support needed to teach on a day to day basis. (Please
visit our website for specifics on classroom extensions for students.)
Our professional development is content focused, and designed to address
pedagogy and content in areas of science education in all grade levels.
While we are open to all schools within New York City who wish
to bring their students to our center, we are inviting schools to become
partners with us so that we can create sustainable relationships that
provide teachers and students access to our facility on an on-going basis.
Our partner schools will have opportunities that include professional
development workshops at the Space Center; unlimited classroom extensions
to the Space Center; access to our curriculum; evening lectures and institutes
from our partners; a meeting space; on-going correspondence and support
from our staff; and access to our lending library of science materials
and books.
