As part of the New York City Department of Education’s Mathematics & Science Department in Teaching & Learning, the Center for Space Science Education (NYCCSSE) offers opportunities for exploration, engagement, and sustained inquiry to students, educators, and the community of New York City.

NYCCSSE offers out-of-classroom science experiences for New York City students (upper elementary through high school) and professional development sessions for teachers in five related content strands:

  1. Living in Space
  2. Robotics
  3. Physics of Flight
  4. Environmental Issues, Weather, and Climate
  5. Astronomy

Highlights of these programs include the Challenger Learning Center, where students take part in a simulated mission to space, and the NASA Aerospace Education Laboratory, where students fly a flight simulator, measure real-time weather conditions, and test an airfoil in our wind tunnel.

To enhance student experiences and support city science teachers, NYCCSSE offers New York City teachers with content-focused professional development opportunities throughout the year.

NYCCSSE is also working towards developing special community and family programs that enhance out of school science learning, including after-school programs, Saturday Science, and summer camp.
