Home > For Students > Programs For High School Students

In an effort to best suit the needs of high school students and teachers, we have designed Classroom Extensions that address five different content themes related to space science: Robotics; Living Environment; Physics of Flight; Environmental Issues; and Astronomy. Classroom Extensions for each of these themes have been further tailored to address the standards outlined in the New York City Scope and Sequence and the New York State Core Curriculum. For example, the Classroom Extension “Stratosphere” addresses environmental issues, a topic that involves an investigation into alternative energy sources and the relationships between climate and weather on Earth, as well as how human decisions can affect those relationships. This topic is well suited to meet the standards in Living Environment when discussing human influences on the environment, in Chemistry when discussing electrochemical cells, nuclear chemistry, and combustion reactions, or in Earth Science when discussing meteorology, climate, and human influences on the environment. Different variations of this Classroom Extension exist to accommodate those standards. Additionally, each Classroom Extension has been developed using recent research in science education and is facilitated or co-facilitated by experienced science teachers.

Robotics (Destination Robot City!)
Build and program robots AND construct a robotic probe to rendezvous with Comet Halley!

Living Environment (Destination Living In Space!)
Discover what it is like to live in space and be weightless AND simulate a mission into space!

Physics of Flight (Destination Lift Off Landing!)
Experience and test airplane AND shuttle flight!

Weather & Climate Environmental Issues (Destination Stratosphere!)
Explore energy alternatives and their impact on the Earth’s climate and weather!

Astronomy (Destination Sun Borough!)
Investigate the solar system and the celestial bodies in Earth’s neighborhood AND rendezvous with Comet Halley!

The following Classroom Extensions are offered for Upper Elementary students and are aligned to the NYC SCOPE AND SEQUENCE.
